Travellers Tales
Real campsites on the way to Lake Eyre On a recent 10 day caravan trip to Marree to fly over Lake Eyre we came across 2 new and 1 very good campsites. Firstly, Clayton Wetlands Campsite, No. 437 in Camps 3 Book, 54km North of Marree. It is 'Donations Accepted'. Why is it so great? It has a circular tank about 6 foot in diameter and about 3 foot high, with 3 spa jets. One for the neck, one for central back and one for lower back, yep and you fill it up with hot artesion water!!! We enjoyed it at 9am only because the 6pm timeslot was taken up with fellow travellers relaxing in the spa with their wines! Absolutely a unique experience out in the outback. Take your own firewood if wanting a fire. Facilities are as stated in the Camp 3 Book. KIngoonya, population 8. Take the dirt road west from Glendambo on the Stuart Highway about 45km (Look out for trains at the crossing, they do not slow down) and pull in at the old School site, adjacent to the train line and at the western end of the town. Donations appreciated, New FLUSH toilets installed by the Outback Community Trust. Mobile phone coverage, little shade, firepit, bring your own wood, Very open area for about 12 to 15 campsites. No power. The hotel is open and meals/beverages are available, motel rooms are all open for business, also self serve diesel and unleaded petrol with your credit card and pin number. Hoteliers, Colin and Maria are happy to chat and help in any way they can. 60km south of Kingoonya, or 192km North of WIrrulla, a large rest/ free camp area, plenty of shade, no facilities at all.
